Quick answer: IPX4 survives sweat and splashes. IPX5 survives sustained water jets, so heavy sweat and getting caught in the rain. IP55 is IPX5 plus dust protection. IPX7 survives a short dunk. None of them mean you can swim or shower with your earbuds. For the gym and an Indian monsoon, IPX5 is the sensible minimum.
How to read an IP code
IP stands for Ingress Protection. The first digit is protection against solids such as dust (0 to 6). The second is protection against water (0 to 9). An X means that category was not tested, not that it scored zero. So IPX5 means: dust not rated, water level 5.
The ratings you will see on earbuds
| Rating | Tested against | Real life |
|---|---|---|
| IPX2 | Light drips | Often the charging case. Keep it dry |
| IPX4 | Splashes from any direction | Light sweat, drizzle |
| IPX5 | Low-pressure water jets | Heavy sweat, rain on a bike ride or run |
| IP54 | Limited dust + splashes | Dusty roads, light sweat |
| IP55 | Limited dust + water jets | Outdoor runs, dusty gyms, rain |
| IPX7 | Immersion to 1 metre for 30 minutes | Dropped in a bucket. Not for swimming |
What no IP rating covers
- Sweat is not water. Tests use fresh water. Salt and oils in sweat are more corrosive, which is why wiping buds after a workout matters more than the number.
- The case. The rating almost always applies to the buds only.
- Soap, shampoo, sea and pool water. They get past seals that stop plain water.
- Steam. Showers and saunas push vapour inside.
- Age. Seals wear with drops and time.
- Warranty. Most brands do not cover liquid damage regardless of the rating.
Which rating do you need?
| You | Minimum |
|---|---|
| Desk, commute by cab or metro | IPX4 |
| Gym, running, two-wheeler in monsoon | IPX5 |
| Outdoor work, dusty sites, trail runs | IP55 |
| Swimming | Buy dedicated swim headphones |

If your earbuds get soaked
- Wipe them dry and shake out water, mesh facing down.
- Leave buds and case open in a dry, airy spot for 24 hours.
- Do not charge until fully dry. Skip the hair dryer and the rice.
FAQ
Is IPX5 waterproof?
No. It is water resistant against jets and rain, not immersion.
Is IPX4 enough for the gym?
For light workouts, yes. If you sweat heavily or train outdoors, choose IPX5.
Which is better, IPX5 or IP55?
The water protection is the same. IP55 adds tested dust protection.
Can I shower with IPX7 earbuds?
Not recommended. Soap and steam defeat seals designed for still, fresh water.
